Whole-Body Wellness Through Science, Nature & Everyday Living
Roots & Wings is an intergenerational experiential learning and wellness program developed by the Women’s Resource Center, Inc. to help families understand how science, health, nature, nutrition, and everyday living are connected. Originally developed around 2016, the program uses enjoyable, hands-on experiences to strengthen academic skills while teaching participants how their daily choices and environment influence physical, emotional, and community well-being.
Rather than reading only from a textbook, Roots & Wings allows participants to see, touch, measure, grow, prepare, explore, and experience learning in real-life settings. Activities include fishing and learning about aquatic life and water quality; gardening and studying soil, plants, insects, and food production; and the Young Chef Program, where participants prepare nutritious foods while practicing measurement, mathematics, food safety, and nutrition.
Environmental activities explore clean air, clean water, conservation, recycling, and preservation of natural resources. Participants may also learn food preservation, healthy meal preparation, and how food travels from the soil to the table.
These experiences strengthen skills in science, mathematics, reading, problem-solving, observation, communication, teamwork, decision-making, and critical thinking. Lessons connect to grade-level learning so participants recognize academic concepts all around them—in the garden, kitchen, water, soil, environment, and their own bodies.
Whole-Body Wellness
Roots & Wings emphasizes the connection between mind, body, environment, family, and community. Wellness includes more than the absence of illness. It involves understanding nutrition, movement, emotional well-being, healthy relationships, environmental health, self-care, and responsible stewardship of the resources around us.

The Roots & Wings Philosophy
ROOTS represent knowing where we come from, understanding the earth and resources that sustain us, developing healthy foundations, and strengthening family and community connections.
WINGS represent gaining the knowledge, confidence, skills, creativity, and independence needed to make healthy choices, explore new opportunities, and carry what we learn into the future.
Roots & Wings turns everyday life into a classroom—connecting science to the soil, mathematics to the kitchen, health to the environment, and learning to life.
